The National Railway Museum celebrates York’s railway heritage and its place in UK engineering history.
This award-winning museum was the first national museum in England outside London, established to tell the story of railways and their impact on society. The museum now celebrates the past, present and future of railways and engineering, to inspire the next generation of thinkers, creators and problem solvers.
How does the National Railway Museum support the York Narrative? Here's some examples...
The museum is about to undergo an ambitious redevelopment, Vision 2025, to transform its site and the way it tells stories. The redevelopment will ensure that the museum continues to be relevant to the people of York, as well as attracting national and international visitors to this railway city.
The museum will also create the UK’s first ‘railway park’ and be the cultural heartbeat for York Central – one of Europe’s largest city centre regeneration projects. In the future the museum will retain its place as an invaluable social and cultural resource for the people of York, as well as becoming a catalyst for regeneration at Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, the museum’s sister site.
Part of Vision 2025 will be a new ‘Wonderlab’, which will inspire young visitors to think like engineers through hands-on exhibits, as well as a brand new Central Hall, which will showcase the future of railways and the engineering challenges that impact our world.
